On http://bday12.wordpress.com/ post: SKINS

I actually did catch the first episode of Skins with my girlfriend after our pre-bar ritual of watching Jersey Shore. MTV marketed the heck out of this show with all of its vague commercials featuring zombie-like teenagers in angst.

To be honest, I think this show is terrible. The pilot pretty much glorified high school shenanigans, and while many of the things in the show were over the top, like the kids stealing a car at 6 am after a party to get a girl who OD’d on pills off of a trampoline and to the hospital before losing the car and their $900 stash of weed in the lake, many of the things in Skins are things that high schoolers actually do, which is pretty disturbing. I get the drinking part, but the drug use in Skins seems over the top and glamorized. You think about all the movies from the 80s about high school, that 70s show, ect. and you realize this isn’t the frist time drug use or alcoholism in high school has been glamorized on television. Skins appeals to a niche’ market of high schoolers. The problem is, this show makes these problems out in extreme ways.
It is a british show transformed into this US version, and Skins was pretty successful there, I would assume being why it is on MTV.
The casting is good, because the kids actually look like they are in High School, and in high school I am sure I would have found Skins to be mildly entertaining and relate to it in small ways. Now though, Skins just disturbs me. This show is screwed up and I will probably never watch it again.
MTV knows what they are doing, and parents are probably scared of Skins. I know I would be if I had a teenager and they were watching it. I think MTV should air a new episode of Jersey Shore every day and round out the rest of the day with music videos. That would be awesome.

On http://rrobinmerritt.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/anti-flag-promotes-violence-i-dont-think-so/ Anti Flag promotes violence? I don’t think so.

Haven’t listened to Anti Flag for a very, very long time, but I know they are for the most part about politics.

The style of music they play, and really the whole world of underground punk rock which has made it into the cult mainstream really gets a bad rap, because a lot of the people who listen to bands like Anti Flag are modern day hippies and don’t care what people think about them.

Kate is right on in her comment. The media expects everyone to be that all-american quarterback type person who listens to Bruce Springsteen. Anti Flag is loud, fast, and the music sounds aggressive, while the message behind it is not. You can say the same about a more mainstream band like System of a Down.

Anti Flag really isn’t my thing, but I know all about them, and they aren’t ICP or anything. The media likes to sensationalize this type of thing into something it isn’t, because many of them probably don’t know about Anti Flag.

Aguilera repeats lines of national anthem

I think she knew the words, just tried to put her own twist onto it. Unfortunately, you can’t do that with the national anthem. The people don’t care. The NFL did a terrible job with the entertainment last night. How about that halftime show?
First, Fergie’s mic was off, and in the group part of I have a feeling you could tell. Then came Fergie’s solo and yeah. Personally, it would probably have been better had it stayed off. The live autotune was wack, and I am now convinced Wil.I.Am. is actually a robot.
Usher saved the day, and Slash popped up to play Sweet Child of Mine with Fergie. It was really really really bad.
The NFL gets this mainstream form of entertainment, and this was really their first venture into something younger generations would appreciate since the wardrobe malfunction. For years, we have had dinosaur rockers, albeit Tom Petty a treat a few years ago.
I am wondering if having the BEP means the NFL has finally gotten past Janet’s snafu. It seems to be more of a joke now instead of an atrocity.

Comment 4: Charter Commercial lacks credibility: Kari Williams

Yeah, I always thought this commercial was pretty wack. They have a radio version too, which makes even less sense. I understand the whole where were you when is really where are you watching it thing, but the truth here kind of takes away from charter is trying to say. Most of the defining events are available for free via over the air channels. Sure, on cable you get your regular season sporting events and all of the shows everyone loves like jersey shore, but if you want to experience those important moments in life that are on TV they are on local television. So, sorry Charter. This commercial makes no sense to me, it tries to come off as inspirational or something like that, and it fails miserably.

Good, more blog comments for the rest of us.

Comment 5 Comment on Energy drinks dangerous?

Unfortunately, Energy Drinks have me. In High School, I drank a Red Bull every single morning, and my vice has carried over to the point where I really can’t go a morning without some sort of energy drink. I don’t really drink coffee a whole lot, so energy drinks are my source of caffeine. I enjoy the taste of pretty much every single kind, and they make me feel good. They are terrible for you, but the mass marketing strategies of this company do a really good job at reeling you in. Energy drinks are delicious, but they sure are not nutritious.

Comment 6 Comment on pre-adulthood in today’s male

Hmm, that is interesting. I think the future generation is falling further and further behind, and don’t know if you can directly correlate it broken down by the sexes. It is still very very interesting. I think it all depends on the individual person, and different people have different goals. I think academics come easier for females, but males tend to be more grounded. I think parental support in this day and age is necessary to a point through college, while 20 years ago it was once you are 18 you are on your own immediately on your 18th birthday. Times have changed, and I see it only getting worse. Societal roles are pretty much out the window now. The man doesn’t support the family, they share it.

Comment 7 Do we really need more Charlie Sheen?

I blogged about this too. I hate it. I hate how “winning and Tiger Blood” have became overplayed terms of hype. No, winning is something a sports team does, and Tiger Blood is a flavor of snow cone. It’s really annoying, and I cannot wait for it to stop. Sheen is totally over his head, but you can’t blame him because his PR stunts are actually working.

Comment 8: remarkably low-scoring game 3/21/11

My middle school basketball team pulled this once, the parents cheering for the other team really weren’t that happy. It was hard for our point guard mentally to just stand at midcourt and hold the ball while he is getting hounded by parents to pass the ball.

I think high school basketball leagues need to implement the shot clock. A team could win the tip and essentially do this for the duration of the first half and score an easy bucket and do it again in the second half to win the game 4-2.

It’s a little humorous, but it is possible for a team to win this way.

I think from a PR standpoint, the shot clock would do wonders for high school basketball. It would at least make things more exciting.

Love in college: Does it exist? – 3/30

It’s difficult to maintain a good relationship in college because there are so many people out there who are just way to busy to make things work. People have commitments to work, school and their own social lives to where a significant other is not high on many people’s list of priorities. I for one think I am lucky, because I have now been in a relationship for seven months, and while it can have its headaches it is fantastic. My longest previous relationship was a month.
A large chunk of maintaining a long-term relationship in college is about growing up IMO. You have to make sacrifices, and it is difficult to do so when you are having so much fun just doing normal college things. It’s more of an adult thing a lot of people do not feel like they are ready for. Some days, I miss being single. It’s how it works I guess. Good post.

We know it’s Friday, stop singing about it – 4/4

A agree about Black not being a part of a musical genre and do not consider Friday as a legitimate song. I feel bad for her and all the negative publicity she is receiving, because let’s face it: Friday was never intended to be a real song at all. Her parents got her in a studio for an experience, to make a music video. It isn’t even her song, and it is overly ridiculous, especially the rap part. The girl doesn’t deserve all the negativity, because she is so young. The song is terrible, yeah. But that’s why it isn’t supposed to be popular. It is her little thing and was never intended for mass media consumption. I’ll admit it, I still like the Backstreet Boys. I grew up listening to them as a kid, and there is a sense of nostalgia associated with it for me.
Any press is good press for this girl, and her 15 minutes can extend and she can make a hell of a lot of money…example: William Hung.
Best of luck to her.

Comment 10: Facebook sponsored stories 4/10/11

I think this is a bad concept, because it exploits facebook users. I do not personally use the “check in feature” because I think it is kind of dumb and do not use an Iphone or any other mobile application based version of facebook where geotagging is possible. Maybe if I did I would.

Facebook does not have my permission to use my status updates as an advertisement, and if this is as ridiculous as it sounds then I could see somebody suing them eventually.

If I say I am drinking a redbull and being a rockstar for example I don’t want to see that as a sponsored status and showing up on Red Bull cans randomly. If I am going to pay $3 to drink the crap I atleast want some royalties for my facebook activity.

Just another example of how far Facebook has come and I don’t like it.
